Why it needs headphones

The effect is binaural: it recreates the small timing and tonal differences between your two ears that tell you where a sound is. Over speakers both ears hear both channels and most of that collapses. On headphones a sound genuinely passes behind you.

Why it goes mono first

The track is downmixed before it is placed. A stereo source already carries conflicting directional cues, and layering HRTF on top of those muddies both. One mono source at one point in space is what makes the position readable.

Not an auto-panner

Most 8D converters bounce a stereo track left and right with an LFO and bury it in reverb. This one models the ear itself — micro-delays, frequency shading, Doppler shift and distance roll-off — which is why the sound moves rather than just sweeping.

Your own paths

The presets are a starting point. A path file is a name, a lap length and a list of waypoints — azimuth, distance, and how long to pause there — in YAML or JSON. Load one and it joins the list.

Do I need special headphones for 8D audio?

Any stereo headphones or earbuds work — there is nothing to buy. The effect is binaural: it recreates the timing and tonal differences between your two ears that tell you where a sound is. Over speakers both ears hear both channels and most of the effect collapses, so headphones are the one requirement.

Why is the track converted to mono before it is placed?

A stereo track already carries its own directional information, and layering spatial positioning on top leaves the two fighting each other. Summing to mono first gives the engine one clean source to place at one point in space, which is what makes the position readable.

Is this 8D audio converter free?

Yes. There is no track length limit, no watermark, no account and no paywall. It runs on your own machine, so it costs nothing to run.

Is my music uploaded anywhere?

No. Every filter and calculation runs inside your browser through an OfflineAudioContext. The file never leaves your device, which is also why rendering is faster than real time — there is no upload or download to wait for.

How is this different from other 8D audio makers?

Most of them auto-pan a stereo track left and right with an LFO and add reverb. Azimuth calculates a genuine head-related transfer function, simulating the micro-delays and frequency shading of real ears, plus Doppler pitch shift and distance roll-off as the sound moves. That is what lets a sound pass convincingly behind you rather than just sweeping across you.
